if you are interested in being part of a local skatepark committee, we will be meeting December 12 at 3pm at the parks commission office located at Hosmer Field (Red Building by the hockey rink). The Park Commission set aside an area to be used now it’s up to us to raise the $28,000 needed to put it all together. Nobody is going to take one skateboarder seriously. One person alone isn’t going to get a skatepark built in our town unless of course you’re going to pay for everything yourself. What we need to do first is get organized. A skateboard park is an expensive facility and people aren’t going to be willing to put their money and time towards something unless it seems worthwhile. What we need to do to show the community that it is worthwhile and will build up a good image and show that there is a need for a skateboard park. I would like to get parents of the skateboarders to become involved in this committee as well as local business. We will decide on a name and logo for our Skatepark Park and committee. When people have heard of our group they will be more willing to donate or help out in some way. Before you start pouring your time into fundraising, I want to get everyone interested together and prepare a presentation for the town selectmen to gain their support and hope they will likely become one of the biggest contributors for your project and at the least, get their support for the idea and take a passive role by publicly saying they support the idea, and promoting the committee. So if you’re interested in supporting/helping out please contact Tim Gallant, Parks Superintendent at 364-7758 or plan to attend the skateboard park meeting on December 12, 2007 at 3pm at the parks department office.

n response to the skateboard park; we held a meeting on 12/12/07 and had attendance by both local youths and adults. We plan on forming a non-profit organization to raise the money ($28-35,000) for the park. We discussed rules, location and how we hope to police the facility as well as multiple uses for the new park (BMX bikes, roller blades and skateboards). We will be meeting again on 1/9/08 at 5pm at the parks office (all are welcome) or you can call 364-7758 (parks office) for more details.
1. If we do have equipment to be checked out it will only be given with the proper equipment.
( Yes we hope to have equipment and it will meet industry standards.)
2. I’m sure if we host an event our insurance will cover it just like it would for football games and other activities in the park.
(That is our belief as well.)
3. Skateboarding is considered an extreme sport. Will helmets and safety equipment be required?
(We will post signs recommending that they be worn when using the park.)
4. If so, who would enforce it?
(If park personnel are in that area we will remind them of the importance but we won’t have an attendant stationed in the area.)
5. Will it be useable to others such as inline skaters and BMX bikes?
(Yes we hope to schedule it for all activities and we are building a BMX (non-motorized track) as well next to our tennis courts.)
6. Could it draw skateboard enthusiasts from other areas?
(Yes, some school actually have started it up as a sport and I hope to get MSAD #43 involved as well once we get things started.)
